client F.L. tax refund

TAX REFUND

This client is a dog walker. She has a really cool small business, very low overheads, a small van, lots of enthusiasm, and lots of, well, walking dogs. She loves animals, loves her work, and each year does her tax return and pays a small amount of tax. One thing though, she has never received from HMRC an automatic self employed tax rebate due to them having already suffered too much tax deducted at source, and in fairness, this is quite normal. A dog walker would never have a client deducting tax at source, and so wouldn’t really expect a tax refund.

So, everything was fine and as it should be. Right? Well, perhaps, so she asked us to take a look and that’s what we did.

We carried out our process, all without the client paying a penny to us, and discovered that within the previous four years we identified areas that could be improved. This was due to their returns not taking full advantage of the many tax free allowances and expense categories that they were, in fact, entitled to. So, we thought there was perhaps an opportunity for a tax refund. We also felt that her vehicle expenses had been calculated absolutely correctly, however not using the mileage allowance relief method, which would have been mathematically kinder to her tax liabilities.

Due to this we created a submission and then presented our calculations, on behalf of the client to HMRC.

And the end result of all that was in a very short time, in this case, around seven weeks, we were happy to inform our client that we had secured for them a self employed tax rebate of £1596.
