CIS TAX REBATE
This client like the previous client and indeed like many others came to us after having worked within the CIS scheme (construction industry scheme) for some time. In fact this client was a veteran. He had well over 20 years experience in the building trade. He’d had a local accountant do his annual tax returns, the same one as many of his colleagues and each year he had been accurately calculating his income, the amounts that contractors had deducted, and of course all his expenses. These figures had been shown on his CIS tax returns and as a result each year he had received, what he thought was the correct amount of CIS tax rebate. However, after being recommended to us, he considered that his affairs could be different if they were handled by ourselves. So he gave us a call and asked us to take care of his upcoming CIS tax return.
This is what we did.
Like all the previous clients you have read about and indeed all the clients you haven’t, we appointed him his ‘OWN’ tax agent.
We liased with the client very closely and scrutinized in close detail all of the allowances and calculation methods that HMRC make available to us. We looked at his mileage allowance, his ‘work from home’ allowance (none had been previously claimed) and even his A.I.A allowance (this allows up to 100% tax relief on certain expenses). And what we created as a submission for a CIS tax return made for very different reading than his previous years.
We sent our work to him, asked him to check everything and confirm that he was happy, (remember, ALL clients get to see our work before it is presented to HMRC. You are consulted at every stage.) and within a couple of days he replied by email telling us to go ahead.
We then submitted our work to HMRC, in time and using the correct format, and the end result of all that was in a very short time, in this case, around three weeks, we were happy to inform our client that we had made our CIS tax return submission, after of course, having him take a look and confirm he was happy with everything, along with our backdated submissions, and that we had secured for him a CIS tax rebate of £6118. This was met with an extremely satisfied response as this figure represented a huge improvement than any rebate he had previously received, so he was very happy indeed.
