Digs. What business expenses can self-employed people claim?
If you’re self-employed you may be able to offset business expenses as part of your tax returns. Perhaps digs could be part of your thinking
Self-employment can mean avoiding the long commute and enjoying the freedom of being your own boss. Plus, you might have heard about tax-deductible expenses. Business owners might tell you to keep receipts, claim client entertainment costs, or deduct part of your rent or mortgage if you work from home. But is all of this true? Let’s separate myth from fact to help you submit your tax return with confidence.
Digs. How do self-employed expenses work?
Self-employment means you are responsible for your own tax affairs. Each year, you submit a tax return to HMRC that details your profits and losses. HMRC then calculates the tax you owe. And perhaps a self employed rebate might be the result.
However, working for yourself isn't free. You will likely incur various costs, such as energy bills, travel expenses, clothing, or marketing, which all reduce your profits. For example, if you're a carpenter who sells a handmade table for £500, but the raw materials and machinery costs total £200, your profit on the table is actually £300.
It wouldn’t be fair to pay tax on profits you haven’t actually made. So, you can deduct your business costs from your profits, which reduces the tax you owe.
To help with this, HMRC lets you enter a sum for expenses on your tax return. You don’t need to provide evidence of your expenses when you submit the return, but you should keep proof in case HMRC asks for it.

Self Employed Tax Back | Are you paying too much?

really? an electrician in southampton has his tickets written off as an expense and gets a tax rebate for it?
Mmmm, this is a tricky one, and you would be suprised at the amount of time we get asked questions of this nature. We will do our best to explain. A southampton electrician getting a tax rebate for the football, dear oh dear, whatever next.
So, if our friend down in sunny Southampton were to pop along to his local team and watch a match, due to him feeling like, well, watching a football match. Well, then no. Of course this isn't an expense as all work expenses that are claimable on your annual tax return have to be 'wholly and exclusively' for work purposes.
So an electrician watching his favourite team on his day off definitely does not count.
However, the strange thing is that should our electrician friend be in the process of selling his services to a juicy new client, and in order to persuade him to give him their business has treated his new prospect to an afternoon of corporate hospitality at the football. Then theoretically, the expenditure on the client is technically a business expense. However also technically the expenditure for himself is not.
As it could be argued that he was watching the football for reasons that were 'other' than wholly and exclusively business purposes, whereas the guy standing next to him was only there as a result of a business invite.
We won't lie, this is definitely a grey area, and most definitely open for interpretation. And we would advise a very healthy dose of sensible thinking if this is something that you are claiming. It could be okay, but be prepared, it is also a tax expense that could be challenged by our illustrious leaders at HMRC.
